Control system before PLC
Most of the control systems used in the industry were in the form of relays and banks of relays. Where a set of relays were responsible for controlling and turning off/on the output devices. In some of these systems, the number of relays was so large that it formed a compartment containing relays and relay banks.
Some of the big problems of these types of systems were inherently mechanical in relays. Depreciation over time due to many switches caused the failure of the relays. Another big disadvantage of these systems was that if a fault occurs in the system, it is time-consuming and difficult to detect the exact location.
