As you know, there are currently three main types of internal combustion engines, which include naturally aspirated, turbocharged and supercharged models. We have already discussed the first two engines in detail in the pedal, and now we want to examine the supercharger. A car supercharger is a mechanical or more recently electric air compressor that is used to move more and faster air into the combustion chamber. The mechanical supercharger is the most common type of these parts, the history of which goes back to the end of the 19th century. The three main and common types of superchargers used in cars are Roots, Lysholm twin-screw and centrifugal.
Roots type superchargers have two parts that are connected to each other and the air is compressed between these two parts and goes to the combustion space. In some cases, three sections can be used to compress the air. This type of supercharger has been used in cars such as the Chevrolet Corvette Z06; But the Lysholm twin-screw car supercharger uses two screws to compress the air, and these screws actually look like special gears. Finally, we reach the centrifugal type supercharger, which looks like a turbocharger and uses centrifugal force to condense the air. But in recent years, electric superchargers are also used. This part uses electricity to rotate the compressor and condense the air, although the standard 12-volt power will not be enough to operate this type of car supercharger, and therefore 48-volt systems are used.
How does a supercharger work?
First, we will discuss the performance of mechanical superchargers, which usually use a belt for their operation, but it is also possible to be connected to the crankshaft through a shaft, gear or chain. The said strap is on a pulley that can be changed to give more or less boost. Polly turns the screws or shafts inside the supercharger so that the compressed air enters the engine with a higher intensity. Centrifugal type superchargers also use a belt, but instead of turning the screws or shafts, it rotates the turbine so that the air is compressed and condensed through centrifugal force. Unlike the turbocharger, the supercharger of a mechanical car will always require a physical connection and connection between itself and the engine.
Benefits and Disadvantages of Car Super Charger
The biggest advantage of a car supercharger is that it provides instant response, while a turbocharger does not. Because the part in question is used by the engine, it always has a certain amount of boost. As the engine speed increases, the amount of boost will also increase, and this increase is more gradual than the turbo charger boost. Another advantage of the mentioned part is not needing some parts such as intercooler, which reduces complexity and costs.
