How are tires made?

Car tire structure

A car tire consists of various components, the presence of each of which is vital for its correct and safe operation. Tires have a layered structure that is well displayed in the image below.

collar

The collar is a ring made of several strands of high-strength steel, covered with rubber. The main task of the collar is to position and center the tire and the rim, as well as absorb the forces from the rim to the tire.

Body

The body of the tire consists of several layers. The most common layer used is polyester threads. In radial tires, these threads are placed perpendicular to the tire tread. In older tires, the threads were placed at a certain angle to the tread. Finally, the woven layers are covered with rubber so that in addition to bonding with other layers, they can trap air inside the tire. Sometimes the strength of tires is measured by the number of layers of their body. In most cars, two-layer tires are used, but in the tires of large commercial airplanes, the number of layers reaches 30 and more.

belt

Belts are a layer of steel threads that are placed just below the tire tread. The duty of the belts is to strengthen the tire against the puncture and to maintain a smooth and suitable surface when the tire is in contact with the road surface.

Additional layers of polyester

Some tires have one or two extra layers of polyester, which makes the other layers stick together more firmly. These extra layers are mostly seen in high speed tires.

side wall

The sidewall in the tire is responsible for maintaining the lateral strength. This part is vital for taking care of other layers as well as protecting the side of the tires and maintaining the air inside the tire.
