Binding steps
Assembling means putting the pages of a book together in order of page number. This stage consists of four operations:
a) Folding
In this operation, which is done by hand or by machine, large printed papers with several pages printed on the back and on it. They are folded so that the pages are placed one behind the other, the folded sheet is called a printed form and it is usually a multiple of 4; A special color, map or images outside the text, between the pages of a form. This work is done by hand;
c) Sorting
In a press, putting together multiple forms of a book in such a way that the pages of the book are next to each other is called sorting. This operation is done in a mechanical press by means of sorting machines;
d) Sewing
After sorting the forms, the bottom of the forms of each cover must be sewn together. This work is done in two ways: bottom sewing and side sewing. Of course, cheap books are not basically embroidered, but many of them are pressed with the help of a special machine. Sometimes, the forms of a book are sewn only with a metal stitch and glued to the cover.
In the shaping of the book, there are four actions:
A) Punching
Sewing the book forms causes swelling to appear at the inflection point. To eliminate this swelling, the forms are put under pressure;
b) gluing
to prevent the stitches from loosening in the understitching method, a layer of special glue is applied to the surface of the book; /p>
C) edge cutting
The uneven edges of the book forms are cut by machine after sewing and punching so that all the copies of the book have the same cut;
d) rounding, Backing, and lining
In this step, first the surface of the book is convex, then a piece of cloth is attached to the surface of the book with silk, which is called lining. In the manual press, the shirazes are sewn to the turning, but in the machine press, the shirazes are attached to the two ends of the turning only for decoration.
Covering includes three steps:
A) Covering
Book covers are usually made of cardboard and fabric or thick paper. For this purpose, first, large sheets of cardboard are cut to the desired size using a cutting machine, then they are pasted on cloth or thick paper whose inner surface is glued, and at the same time, thin strips of thick paper are also flexibly placed in the space between both pieces of cardboard. It sticks to the bottom fabric. Then the extra edges of the fabric are turned to the inside of the cover and two pieces of cardboard are attached to the inner surface; All of these cases were done manually in the old days, but now machines have been made in Iran itself, and some of this work is done more quickly and regularly. B) Cover printing
Insert the title, author's name, and other bibliographic information and some decorations on the cover and cover. The book is called cover print. This work is done by printing in a normal way or by gilding. In the last method, special letters or clichés and thin gold or colored sheets are used;
C) Covering
At this stage, the surface of the two linings of the book cover and the mesh fabric of the book are glued. They hit and put the connected forms inside and by applying pressure, they stick the inflection of the forms to the inflection of the cover, and the lining of the sheets to the inner surface of the cover.
