What is interior architecture?
Interior architecture focuses on the interior space and its function for human life. Interior architecture combines art and science to create or renovate the interior of various buildings such as homes, offices, or other interior spaces. This type of architecture also involves converting one type of space into another (also called adaptive reuse), such as converting the interior of an old office building into habitable housing.
What does an interior architect do?
Interior architects are usually involved in the construction or renovation of interior environments and often change the actual structure of the housing. They must consider building structure and building codes to create a safe and livable living space (such as installing proper plumbing and electrical systems), and incorporate architectural design analysis into all of their projects. Interior architects may also incorporate sustainable design options into their creations, such as "green" developments with alternative heating and lighting systems.
✔️ How to become an interior architect?
Attending an architecture school can lead to a wide range of career opportunities such as real estate development, home interior architecture, office interior architecture, stage design, urban planning, or industrial design. To become a licensed interior architect, you must:
Find out what your local architectural association needs. The first step on your path to starting a career as an interior architect is to find and complete the qualifications set by your local architectural board.
getting a degree Most architectural associations in the United States require prospective architects to complete an undergraduate program to obtain a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Interior Architecture (or an equivalent professional degree program approved by the National Architectural Accreditation Board). It is very important to choose a school that is accredited by the Council on Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA). This accreditation ensures that the education you receive in your interior architecture program meets recognized industry standards.
Passing the Licensing Exam To become a professional architect: You must successfully pass the Architect Registration Exam created by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB).
What is interior design?
Interior design is a field that focuses more on art than function and incorporates aesthetic elements such as furniture, flooring, walls, window coverings, and artwork. It also includes color schemes, textiles, lighting, design materials and sustainability. Interior design is used in a wide range of spaces, from residential and corporate to public and industrial.
✔️ Responsibilities of the interior designer
Interior designers are tasked with making rooms and interior spaces comfortable, functional and aesthetically pleasing. Most interior designers begin projects by assessing the clients' needs and goals, which usually include how they will use the room and the ways people move through the space.
After meeting with clients, interior designers research materials and sketch ideas for designs. Many interior designers also use CAD and BIM programs to create 2D and 3D plans. These digital floor plans usually include room layouts, electrical and plumbing systems, wall and floor materials, and lighting and furniture specifications. In most cases, the plans also include the building permits needed to implement the plan.
Interior designers then estimate costs and timelines, order materials, apply for necessary permits, and find contractors to complete the work. Most interior designers manage small teams of contractors and also work closely with architects, engineers, and tradespeople. They usually supervise all construction and installation related to their drawings and may do some of the design and installation work themselves.
While some interior designers are generalists, many choose areas of specialization. Some may focus on specific styles, specific rooms, such as kitchens and bathrooms, or types of structures, such as residential or corporate spaces.

✔️ What is the difference between interior architecture and interior design?
While there is a lot of overlap between the roles of an interior architect and an interior designer, there are also differences between the two professions, including:
Interior architects deal with structural renovation. The interior architect usually designs the entire interior structure and is involved in the design process on a more technical level. They work with builders, contractors and technicians to facilitate the renovation or renovation of an existing structure.
You need a license to become an architect. The main difference between interior architecture and interior design is that all architects must have a license to call themselves an architect and practice architecture.
Interior design is more about aesthetics. Interior design is a profession that focuses on architecture and space planning, creating cohesive and aesthetic designs for the interior of homes and businesses within a built environment or existing structures. However, the interior design profession has evolved over the years as more designers have taken these technical aspects to address architectural structures in their designs. There are different qualifications. To become a certified interior designer (rather than an interior decorator), some countries may require a license or certification from the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA). The National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) is a three-part exam that provides the highest level of certification for interior designers and can help increase your chances of owning a successful interior design or interior design firm.
