History of water tanks
Role of water reservoir in ancient Iranian urban life
The importance of water and its storage in ancient Iran led to the construction of an architectural structure called water reservoir. Reservoir is an important structure in traditional Iranian architecture; A covered and closed underground water tank that was used to store drinking water throughout the year or to store cold water in the summer season. Being located at a depth lower than the surface of the ground made it possible to direct the running water to its reservoirs, and at the same time, the lower depth made the water cooler. In addition to water reservoirs, other water reservoirs were used by the public. For example, for a long time, domestic outdoor reservoirs called water ponds have been common in Iran, which were filled with water through the channels of the urban irrigation network in certain periods of time. Of course, they were not used for drinking. Usually, large-scale reservoirs were built in neighborhoods for public use, and the water was of better quality and was used for drinking by the people. The water of the ponds was usually used for sanitary services and washing.
