What is a bed rebar?
The use of bed rebar in the field of construction helps to better resist the structure against tensile and compressive forces. This rebar consists of steel wires that are placed in the mortar walls to strengthen and stabilize the internal connections. These steel wires are designed in such a way that it is easy to install them in the joints between building units. According to the eighth topic of the National Building Regulations, the steel rebars are the wire bed that deforms to the longitudinal state.
Also, transverse wires are welded in the form of ladders or trusses. These reinforcing sections strengthen the structure by being placed in the mortar joints between the rows of units. In other words, bed rebars strengthen the mortar walls that in the past decades, engineers supported them with corner wall posts and other rebars. However, it is the bed steel bars that have the best performance and are known as the best method of reinforcing mortar walls.
The use of bed rebar found a specific and international regulation about seventy years ago. At first, the United States created regulations for the use of bed rebar. Also, currently, in European countries and countries such as Australia, India, Canada, New Zealand, etc., we see national regulations for its use.

If there was no rebar, today we would not see giant skyscrapers and high and strong buildings. Rebar is an essential component in the construction industry. You might assume that concrete makes the building strong, but the main role of the building's strength lies with this steel section. This unique element prevents structures from breaking when tensile forces are applied. This element is made of steel and has different divisions based on type and size.
One of the practical and cheap methods to strengthen building structures is the use of steel sections called bed rebar. This steel cross-section is produced from steel wires with a thickness of four millimeters, which are anti-rust and anti-erosion. The use of this steel section makes the walls resistant to earthquakes and forces entering the building. Also, the use of this product in building structures is only 0.5% of the construction costs, which according to this amount, the use of this method will be cheaper than the common methods. The bed rebar is made in different dimensions with mortar joints. In building construction, concrete is used to deal with tensile forces, and one of the ways to create resistance is to use this steel section.
Types of Bed Rebar
✅ ladder bed rebar
This model consists of two parallel long rebars, often made of galvanized or stainless steel, and narrower rebars with resistance welding are placed between them. This connection creates a ladder view; For this reason, it is known as ladder bed rebar. The size of the ladders is also such that they are installed only in the depth of one brick. This structural member is connected to the wall by means of hooks and clamps; so that two parallel armatures are based on the wall. Finally, by transferring the mortar mixture on the rebars, the process of bricklaying and wall construction is done. After finishing the work, the ladder is hidden inside the wall.
✅ Truss bed rebar
The truss bed model consists of two long parallel steel rebars, with a zigzag-shaped rebar connected between them with a resistance welding process, and an effect similar to a truss creates In addition, two long steel bars should be galvanized or stainless. In general, truss and ladder rebars are not particularly different from each other and even their applications are the same. The most important difference between them is related to their level of difficulty; Truss bars have more hardness and are considered a better choice.
