What is MDF?

The abbreviation MDF is taken from the first letters of the words medium density fiberboard meaning "medium density fiberboard". MDF is obtained from waste and natural wood chips of trees, and for this reason, it is considered one of the wood products that are covered by various coatings. Each cover that is drawn on the raw MDF, causes distinctive characteristics to be attributed to the MDF sheet, which is different from the others in terms of price and appearance, as well as quality. In the MDF production process, after collecting, the wood chips and scraps are cleaned and homogenized, and then they are made uniform and crushed (paste). After this work and after performing various other processes, they are dried by the passage of hot air and become fibers. The produced fiber is cut into the right size and dried again to remove its moisture. The obtained product is sanded to make it smooth and uniform, and then they are painted or coated, or even packaged raw. In the 1980s, the devices and equipment for making MDF sheets entered Iran, and we were able to achieve self-sufficiency in the field of manufacturing and producing MDF sheets. Before that, MDF sheets were imported from other countries, which naturally had a higher price in terms of economy and were not used for cabinet making because they were not economical. Imported MDF was mostly used in commercial, industrial and construction fields.

Types of MDF

MDF sheets are classified according to thickness, application and coating. Because MDF sheets with different thicknesses are available in the market; Some are thin and some are thicker, which are used for different applications. In addition, they always put a coating on the sheets to increase their resistance in addition to beauty. Depending on what material is used as a cover, the sheets will have different capabilities and even be very diverse in terms of appearance.

Types of MDF in terms of thickness

Due to the wide use of MDF material, its sheet is produced with different thicknesses to be used in various domestic and industrial uses. Raw MDF sheet is usually produced with a thickness between 3 mm and 38 mm. The most widely used thickness, which is also used in kitchen cabinets, is 16 mm sheet. In some parts, including the kitchen counter, thicker sheets of 30 mm are used. Even sheets with a thickness of 3 mm and 18 mm are used in the kitchen depending on the style and model of the cabinets. The dimensions mentioned are for the raw MDF sheet; Due to the coating that is drawn on the raw MDF, it may be added to its thickness to a very small extent.

Using MDF sheet to bear heavy weight

In general, the larger the diameter of the MDF sheet and the higher its density, the higher its weight bearing capacity. But in particular, there are also types of MDF that are made and designed to withstand high weight. This MDF model is mostly used in industry and construction materials so that they can bear the weight of heavy objects and equipment well. In fact, with new technology, it is possible to produce any fiberboard with different weight tolerances for specific domestic and industrial uses.
