How to determine the gold grade?
How to determine the gold grade?

Gold is one of the metals whose color, luster, and rarity have caused it to gain a high value. For this reason, it is used as an item for investment and making different jewelry for women and men. Of course, pure gold is a soft and completely flexible metal that is also light in weight. This metal is so soft that it can be easily shaped by hand and gets scratched when hit.
The gold bars that are in the banks are of this type of gold. But the type of gold that is used to make jewelry has a different percentage of purity. They usually show the purity of gold with a fraction of 24. It means that 24-karat gold is gold with 100 percent purity. Different countries use gold with different karats to make their jewelry. For example, Italy and Iran use 18 karat gold to make jewelry. But Saudi Arabia and India use 24-carat gold in making their artifacts. Usually, the carat of gold can be easily recognized from the numbers engraved on the back of the gold. The number behind the gold shows the gold grade in percentage. For example, the number 999 is engraved on 24-carat gold, which means that 99.9% of it is gold jewelry or bullion. Also, the number 750 is engraved on the artifacts made of 18 karat gold.

چگونه عیار طلا را تشخیص دهیم؟

As mentioned, the gold grade can be easily understood from the number engraved on the work. But in some cases, due to reasons such as the passage of time, impact and scratches, the engraved number is distorted. In this case, there are methods to detect the gold grade.

Perhaps the most famous method of detecting gold is the use of touchstone and acid. The touchstone is a black stone made of silicon and quartz. To determine the grade of gold, it is drawn on a touchstone so that some gold remains on the touchstone. Of course, this is done in such a way that the appearance of the gold is not damaged. Then some acid is poured on it. If gold does not dissolve in acid, it means that the grade of gold is equal to the grade of acid. If the gold becomes a little pale, it means that its grade is a little lower than the grade of the acid. But if it disappears completely, it is possible that it is not gold at all or its grade is very low. There are acids for different grades of gold.

Some gold shops use an optical spectrometer to determine the grade of gold. In this device, the spectrum of ultraviolet light and visible light is irradiated. According to the type of light frequency that the metal absorbs, the gold grade can be recognized.

Of course, there is a more accurate method known as rigiri. In this method, a rigiri or laser device is also used. In fact, it can be said that this method is the most accurate and the best method for detecting the gold grade. This device accurately determines the grade of gold and the percentage of alloys used in making gold.
