Your car uses the gasoline in its fuel tank to start the engine, but small impurities such as dirt, paint chips, rust, debris, or other contaminating particles from the tank itself or dirty fuel delivery hoses can negatively affect the performance of your engine. To prevent wear and tear and eventual failure of the fuel pump and injectors, these contaminants must be filtered. The fuel filter inside the tank is designed to prevent these small impurities from entering your car's engine. The gasoline filter or filter in the tank actually has the same function as the air filter and traps small particles in a special media before they can enter your engine.
There are two types of gasoline filters on the market, both of which work in exactly the same way: the fuel is passed through a filter media that is often made of a special paper, and this media removes any deposits and pollutants.

Where is the petrol filter?
The fuel filter is located somewhere between the fuel tank and your engine. Normally, the fuel filter or fuel strainer is located inside the tank (at the beginning of the fuel line that delivers fuel to your car) or somewhere in the middle of the fuel line (usually on the floor of the car).
In some cars, such as German cars, the filter or the fuel strainer is placed under the back seat of the driver and next to the gas pump of the car. If you are not sure where your car's fuel filter is, take a look at the car's manual or visit an authorized repair shop.
