In an electric car, there is no internal combustion engine and therefore no exhaust, so no smoke is produced when driving. Considering this issue, all types of electric cars can be very effective in reducing air pollution in cities. Different models of electric cars are completely different from gasoline and diesel models in terms of structure and technology, and they are divided into different types.

What is an Electric Car?

An electric car uses one or more electric motors to move. These cars have environmental, economic, and technological advantages, some of which include reducing air pollution in cities, saving fuel, reducing annoying sounds, and increasing energy efficiency. In an electric car, the necessary energy is provided by the battery.

How Electric Cars Works

Electric cars use electricity instead of fossil fuel to power the engine. These cars have a rechargeable battery that stores electrical energy. The electric motor produces the power needed to move the wheels with the help of the energy in the battery. In general, in an electric car, the driving forces have a simpler structure than gasoline and diesel models.

Electric Car History

Contrary to popular belief, the electric car was born in the 19th century and even at first it was more popular than the internal combustion car. But with the advancement of internal combustion engine technology and the reduction of fuel prices, electric cars fell behind the market and were gradually forgotten.

In the 19th century, several inventors in different countries such as Hungary, the Netherlands, and America proposed the idea of an electric car. At that time, even several models of this electric car were produced. The world's first electric car can be identified in 1828, which was built by Anius Istvan Yedlik, a Hungarian inventor and engineer. This car was able to reach a speed of 4 kilometers per hour. At such a speed, this electric car was much slower than a horse! Of course, the Hungarian car was designed as an example of the potential of electric power for ground transportation and never reached the stage of mass production.

The first electric car on a commercial scale was built in 1890 by a Scottish chemist living in America named William Morrison. This 4 horsepower car was able to carry 6 people and move at a speed of 23 km/h. Having studied chemistry, Mr. Morrison was more interested in battery technology than the transportation industry, so he took a different path. Of course, his achievements in the field of electric cars inspired other researchers and scientists, and they developed several other electric cars.

You may ask what was the reason for the failure of electric cars in the 19th century and why these cars could not become widespread at that time? To answer this question, there are many reasons, the most important of which are:

  • Developments in the oil industry and lower fuel prices
  • Lower speed and range in Comparison with internal combustion vehicles
  • Incompatibility with customers' tastes and needs
  • Limited capacity and life of batteries
  • No suitable network for charging batteries

These reasons caused electric cars to leave the market in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and give way to internal combustion cars.

In recent years, due to environmental concerns and energy security, Electric cars are gaining attention again. Significant advances in batteries, electronics, and electric motors have improved performance, reduced costs, and increased the appeal of electric vehicles. Since 2010, sales of all types of electric vehicles have grown rapidly, and now nearly 20 million of these types of vehicles are on the streets and roads of the world. Tesla Model 3, Nissan Leaf and Renault Zoe are among the best-selling electric cars.
