What is a steel slag?

Steel slag is a side product that occurs in the steel production process. When impurity metals such as pig iron are melted in electric arc furnaces or blast furnaces, impurities including silicates, metal oxides, sulfurs, and other unusable elements react with the molten material and separate as slag. These slags are separated from the molten steel as molten materials and gradually cool and solidify.
