The first concrete mixer named "Maltar Mixer" was registered on February 9, 1904 by Richard Budlander from Breslau, Germany. The front axle and wagon wheels were replaced by a large drum with paddles inside, and as the vehicle moved along the road, the rotation of the drum along the ground caused the concrete to be mixed.
A portable mixer invented by Alva Handsel. , was patented on January 12, 1909. This mixer used a hexagonal drum but not a drum that rolled along the floor. A coal-fired boiler connected to a piston pump fed the mixer, which had a gear to drive a chain drive.

Finally, the first real concrete truck was invented and patented in 1920 by Ackert Bickel of Kansas City. The truck consisted of a boiler, a real steering wheel, an internal combustion engine, and a hand-crank starter that protruded from the front of the car. However, the most notable thing about this truck mixer was the large amount of dead space on the truck chassis. The truck mixer invented by Charles Ball of Milwaukee on June 24, 1930 was capable of mixing concrete. Over the next 2 years, Ball substantially modified the drum mixer designs and incorporated them into his own inventions. For the next 40 to 50 years, the general appearance of concrete mixers did not change much. In the 1930s, the demand for concrete trucks increased due to the increase in highway construction, and over time the development of the truck mixer made significant progress.
