How does a hydrocyclone work?

The basis of hydrocyclone work is based on the rotating flow of slurry. When the slurry is forced into the conical chamber of the device, it rotates spirally under the influence of the angular design of the inlet.

In this case, the created centrifugal force causes the heavier particles to move towards the wall and down and be discharged from the lower outlet (underflow), while smaller and lighter particles are removed from the upper part (overflow) along with the central flow.

In this way, the hydrocyclone, as a continuous system without a mechanical filter, performs classification, thickening or separation of fine and coarse particles.

Engineering design and its effect on separation efficiency

The performance of a hydrocyclone is directly related to its geometric design. The angle of the cone, the diameter of the body, the size of the apex and the vortex, all play a vital role in determining the flow rate, pressure and cut size.

The main components of hydrocyclone and the role of each part

A standard hydrocyclone consists of the following components:

Inlet: The angular design of the inlet creates a vortex movement in the slurry.

Body: It is usually made of steel, iron or polyurethane and covers the main part of the flow.

Liner: The wearing part of the device that has the most contact with the slurry. Choosing the right liner material directly affects the useful life of the equipment.

Vortex (Vortex Finder): the exit path of light flow and smaller particles.

Spigot (APEX): the discharge path of larger and heavier particles.

Types of hydrocyclone based on the type of liner

1. Hydrocyclone with polyurethane liner

Polyurethane liner is one of the most popular choices in the mining industry due to its high resistance to wear, elasticity and shock absorption.

This type of liner has excellent performance against slurry with sharp and abrasive particles. Long life, light weight and resistance to corrosion are its key features.

In Zarrineh, polyurethane liners are produced with different degrees of hardness (from Shore 70 to Shore 95) to be selected according to the type of material and working conditions.

2. Jacket hydrocyclone

In this design, the liners are installed inside the body as separate parts. This structure allows quick and easy replacement, reducing production line stoppages and saving repair costs.

Zarrine produces a jacket liner for 15 and 20 inch hydrocyclones and EWO Wash models completely natively. Its important advantage is that there is no need to send the metal body for re-lining, just replace the new liner.

3. Rubberline hydrocyclone

Rubber liner is a suitable option for environments with medium wear and need to absorb shock. In addition to being resistant to wear, natural rubber also absorbs mechanical shock and vibrations well.

Using strong industrial adhesives and precise baking operations, Zarrine guarantees the excellent adhesion of the liner to the body.

4. Full polyurethane hydrocyclone

In some applications, the entire body is made of polyurethane. This model is lighter, rust-proof and corrosion-resistant, and is an ideal option for wet environments and lines that need to be moved easily.
