📍What is ammonium sulfate?
Ammonium sulfate is a type of mineral fertilizer that contains a combination of ammonium (NH4+) and sulfate ions (SO4-). This fertilizer contains nitrogen and sulfur and is used as a decomposable source of nitrogen and sulfate in the soil. Ammonium is usually prepared and supplied as a colorless powder or white crystalline crystals.
Applications of ammonium sulfate fertilizer
Nitrogen supply: Nitrogen is one of the essential elements for vegetative growth of plants (growth of leaves and stems). Ammonium sulfate is a good source of nitrogen in the form of ammonium (NH₄⁺), which is easily absorbed by plant roots.
Sulfur supply: Sulfur is another essential nutrient for plants, which plays a role in making proteins and some vitamins. Ammonium sulfate provides a significant source of sulfur, especially for crops with high sulfur requirements (such as legumes, cruciferous vegetables, onions, and garlic).
Amending alkaline soils: Ammonium sulfate has acidifying properties and can help reduce the pH of alkaline soils. This is useful for plants that have trouble absorbing nutrients in soils with high pH.
